They are called Pastore Bergamasco. Literally meaning Shepherd Bergamasco. Tracing back through several centuries to the orient and brought to the west to tend the Bergamo sheep high in the Italian Alps. This wonderful breed almost met with extinction and if not for the efforts of some very thoughtful and talented individuals we very well may not have the pleasure of this rare companionship breed. Today specimens hailing from the ancient genetic lines are readily available to those who are willing to provide the care and loving-kindness these dogs require. That said, the secret of this breed is the very little hands on care they actually do require. They are a very hearty animal free from disease and inherited illnesses so often seen in other breeds. Again, this is almost entirely due to strict attention to detail in breeding across genetic lines.
